And down it goes. And doesn't work, at least not immediately. You know, drinking fatal poison never seems to really work in movies and literature (unless it's a murder mystery). Ever. It might make you sick, but it'll never kill anyone. You gotta stick to guns and swords. (Well, I guess it worked for Romeo. But it did fail for Juliet! Omigosh, spoilerz!)
Stinkoman brings up a good point here. 1-Up could easily get rebuilt with backup memory, so any threat here is moot as long as there's someone out there who'll want to rebuild him. Hey, it happened to the Bob and George robots many times. Of course, maybe 1-Up knows that. Then he could actually be a martyr and be alive. But then Stinkoman knowing it also kind of ruins his entire plan.
And of course I have the now-unnessecary plot device angrily thrown offscreen so I don't have to mess with it anymore.
