'Needs More Homsar'

You need more of this guy.

This being the Homestar Runner Fanstuff Wiki, we expect most fanstuffs to take place in the Homestar Runner universe with Homestar Runner characters. You aren't restricted to just the characters and locations that The Brothers Chaps have created: you are allowed to expand on the Homestar Runner universe with your own characters and places, as long as they do not make up the majority of your fanstuff. This has historically been a difficult policy to enforce since the "correct" amount of Homestar Runner is subjective, but if you err on the side of caution and include more Homestar Runner characters as opposed to less, you should be fine.

Staying in Character

Since you'll be writing dialogue and actions for Homestar Runner characters a lot of the time, it's a very good idea to stick to the established characteristics that The Brothers Chaps have given them. This isn't so much a policy as a highly recommended suggestion: not writing in character may have a very negative effect on the quality of your fanstuff. Major deviations from the normal behaviours and actions of the character, however, may be considered rule-breaking, since with large enough changes the character you call "Strong Bad" could practically be a whole new person.

There are many characters that have non-established personalities, such as many of the variations or secondary characters. Feel free to create your own personality for these characters (keeping in mind the surrounding environment and universe in which they are set) and even base your fanstuff around one or more of these characters: just remember to keep appearances from established characters high.

Examples

  • Reality is a Harsh Mistress: a fanfic that shows what might happen if the Homestar Runner characters found their way into the real world. Despite the majority of the fanfic taking place in the real world, this is okay because there are several Homestar Runner characters featured consistently and a solid backstory which explains it all.
  • Other Character Email Tampo: an email show based around three Stinkoman 20X6 enemies. Since the characters had no established personalities, one was created for them (and many other characters that feature in the emails), however frequent appearances and plots involving Stinkoman and 1-Up (the "established" characters of the 20X6 universe) keep it safe.
  • Homsar's Blog: a blog that takes the characteristics of Homsar and expands them into a whole new personality. This is okay since it doesn't clash with any of the characteristics given to him by The Brothers Chaps and has continual interaction with the other established characters of Homestar Runner.

If in doubt...

Ask the community (the forum is a great place to do this). A quick one line synopsis of your future fanstuff is often all it takes to see whether your fanstuff is safe, or whether it "needs more Homsar".

What the heck does "needs more Homsar" mean anyway

'Needs More Homsar' is a meme that originated on the Fanstuff Forum, indicating that a Homestar Runner cartoon didn't feature Homsar prominently enough. It is recommended that it be written in italics, Times New Roman and in a large font size when used.

In the context of this policy, it basically means "Needs More Homestar Characters" as opposed to just "Needs More Homsar". In fact, you are not required to feature Homsar in your fanstuff at all!
